When should you order a commercial WiFi survey?

A commercial WiFi survey is not just for new builds. Here is when predictive or on-site surveys pay off — and what happens when teams skip them.

Teams often treat a WiFi survey as optional paperwork. In commercial environments, it is usually the difference between wireless that holds up on opening day and a floor full of APs that still leave dead zones.

Order a survey before a new build or major renovation

If walls, ceilings, or floor plans are changing, the RF environment changes too. A survey before install helps you:

  • Place APs based on real materials and obstacles, not assumptions
  • Size cabling and closet capacity for the final design
  • Avoid expensive moves after ceilings close or fixtures go in

This applies to retail stores, hotels, offices, and public-facing spaces alike.

Order a survey when density requirements change

Density shifts when:

  • Handheld scanners or mobile POS become standard on the sales floor
  • Conference or event spaces need higher concurrent capacity
  • Guest WiFi usage grows beyond the original design
  • Back-of-house workflows add more wireless devices

A design that worked at launch may not survive a material change in device count or usage pattern.

Order a survey when users report chronic issues

If teams keep saying “WiFi is bad here” but the problem moves or changes by time of day, guessing AP placement usually wastes money. A proper survey helps separate:

  • Coverage gaps
  • Capacity limits
  • Interference sources
  • Cabling or switching constraints masquerading as wireless problems

Predictive vs on-site: what is the difference?

Predictive surveys model the environment from plans and material assumptions. They are useful early in design when you need a directional plan and budget context.

On-site surveys validate the real environment with measurements. They are stronger before final AP placement, especially in complex retail, hospitality, or mixed-construction spaces.

Many projects use both: predictive early, on-site before final install.

What teams skip when they go straight to install

When surveys are skipped, these problems show up later:

  • APs mounted where ceiling constraints or pathways make cabling painful
  • Guest and staff SSIDs deployed without capacity planning
  • Closets that cannot support the switching and PoE load
  • Post-open tuning cycles that disrupt live operations

The install may look complete while the environment is still hard to support.

What to send before scheduling survey work

Helpful inputs include:

  • Floor plans or reflected ceiling plans
  • Known problem areas or device types
  • Guest vs staff network requirements
  • Opening dates or occupancy constraints
  • Photos of existing closets and AP locations if it is a refresh
